Shaping The Future Sustainable Urban Innovation

by Afiqah

This week, Schinkels attended the JSCF 2023 which was held at the Persada Johor International Convention Centre. It was launched by YAM Tunku Tun Aminah Maimunah Iskandaria and accompanied by our Johor Chief Minister, Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi on 12 June 2023. In this event, we wanted to be one of the technology partners in developing this city. One of the technologies we have is a facial recognition system. We have been used in whole city environments, risk identification systems and in various asset protection environments.

Johor Smart City is an initiative aimed at transforming the state of Johor in Malaysia into a smart and sustainable urban environment. The project focuses on leveraging technology and data to enhance the quality of life for residents, improve economic opportunities, and create a more efficient and connected city. It typically involves integrating various technologies, such as the Internet of Things (IoT), data analytics, and connectivity, to create a connected and intelligent urban environment.

There is more than 70 booth and 70 speakers were joining the event. Among the booths Schinkels has visited on the second day of the exhibition were:

  • Selangor Industrial Corporation (SIC): Which has been involved in various businesses, core business activities being project development, trading of building material & insurance. They provide infrastructure, services, and facilitate business networking to attract investments and help businesses establishment.

The Johor state government, in collaboration with various stakeholders, is working on several key areas to develop Johor Smart City. These areas include:

  • Smart Infrastructure: The development of a robust digital infrastructure, including high-speed internet connectivity, to support the implementation of smart technologies and enable data-driven decision-making.
  • Smart Mobility: Enhancing transportation systems through the use of intelligent transportation systems, smart traffic management, and the promotion of sustainable modes of transportation such as electric vehicles and public transit.

  • Smart Living: Encouraging the adoption of energy-efficient practices and technologies in buildings to reduce energy consumption, improve sustainability, and create a comfortable living and working environment.

  • Smart Governance and Services: Implementing digital platforms and systems to enhance government services, streamline administrative processes, and improve citizen engagement and participation.

  • Smart Economy and Innovation: Promoting the growth of digital industries, supporting entrepreneurship and innovation, and creating an ecosystem that nurtures startups and technology-driven businesses.

  • Smart Environment: Implementing initiatives to protect and preserve the natural environment, such as smart waste management systems, water conservation programs, and the integration of green spaces within the city.

  • Smart People: Enabling the development of intelligent individuals within a smart city by nurturing an environment that emphasizes continuous learning, ensuring equitable educational and training opportunities, and encouraging the cultivation of vital skills.

By implementing these strategies, cities can create an environment that nurtures smart people, fosters innovation, and enables the development of the skills required to drive the growth and success of a smart city.

We hope that with a good strategy and leadership from the local authorities, the future of the younger generation will be more secure and safe. All the dreams to make Johor a smart city in 2030 do not only involve the government but also all of us.
